About This Listing

Optek SmartLight30-C Birdseye Maple Top guitar.

JUST the guitar (see below).

Immaculate, like new condition.  Beautiful birdseye finish.  Looks and sounds brand new.  Spent nearly all of its life inside a fur-lined hard case (case not included in this sale).  Selling because I haven’t played it for years and its potential is being wasted.  I am the original owner.

The SmartLight was Optek's top of the line at the time (1997).  From the manufacturer (verbatim):

“Our top of the line 30-C has an ash body, birdseye maple top and deluxe ivory binding on the top and bottom. Gold Hardware including Gold GOTOH tuners. This guitar also features a three-way position "Gibson Style" selector switch, independent volume and tone controls for magnetic and single coil pickups, and independent output jacks for magnetic and single coil pickups. Includes three pickups: two Seymour Duncan Little 59'r pickups and one Piezo pickup (under bridge saddle). Available in orange sunburst.”

HOWEVER, this particular guitar shipped custom from the factory with a Seymour Duncan Duckbucker neck pickup.

Additional construction info:

  • Bolt-on maple neck
  • 21 frets
  • Rosewood fingerboard
  • Top-mount truss rod
  • fixed Ovation style bridge.

This guitar was designed to be used both as a learning tool and as a standalone guitar.

  • For learning: there are six LEDs embedded in the neck at each fret (1 per string).  When used with requisite hardware/software, the LEDs light up to show finger positions as you play along with properly formatted song files.  It can be used with a computer (with the SmartPort) or without a computer (with the FretLight Connection Kit).

I DO NOT HAVE THE SMARTPORT INTERFACE, THE CONNECTION KIT, THE POWER SUPPLY, THE FOOTSWITCH, THE RS-232 SERIAL CABLE, THE MIDI CABLE,OR THE Win95/98 SOFTWARE, various combinations of which are required to light up the LEDs.  All of these accessories were lost during a move over a decade ago.  To the best of my knowledge, you CAN NOT trigger the LEDs without at least some of this equipment.  That being said, and while I can’t 100% guarantee it because I can’t light them up to confirm, I have no reason to believe that any of the guitar's electronics don’t work.

  • For standalone playing: the S-Duncs definitely DO work, perfectly (per the 1997 description above, make sure you’re plugged into the correct ¼” output jack – one is for the traditional magnetics, the other is for the bridge-embedded piezos).  The Little 59’r at the bridge is a ceramic, PAF-aspiring, medium output mini-humbucker with an even bass and treble response with a slightly scooped midrange kind of tone.  To my ears it’s a little “quacky”.  The split-pole (3 per coil) Duckbucker, also a ceramic single coil sized humbucker, has a “sparkly” single coil tone with more treble and a more scooped midrange.  It has some “bounciness” and a snappy low end and can cut through a mix.

This sale is ONLY the guitar -- I DO NOT HAVE THE SMARTPORT INTERFACE, THE CONNECTION KIT, THE POWER SUPPLY, THE FOOTSWITCH, THE RS-232SERIAL CABLE, THE MIDI CABLE, OR THE Win95/98 SOFTWARE.  Also not included: a stand, case, or gig bag, an amp, a strap, any cables, nor any picks.

Please note that although the digital interface to the guitar is via a MIDI-shaped plug, I’m confident that the guitar is NOT a MIDI-compatible device.

  • the FretLight Connection Kit (for use w/o PC)
  • the SMARTPort Interface (for use w/PC)
