Back in the mid-60s the Italian-made Eko line of Vox guitars
had the Mark IX, a teardrop Vox body with 9 strings, sort of ½ a 12 string -- the
doubled E and B, octave G, but single D A and E. This produces some of the 12-string shimmer with less bass string rumble and tuning issues.
But you never see old Mark IX in good shape for under $1500 and good ones are closer to $2K. So I got a 9 string from Phantom Guitars, known for their cool and big-time
improved versions of the Eko Mark and Phantom body shapes and
decided to go with a cool red Phantom body instead of Mark shape long associated with the 9 string. There are
only two 9 strings ever made with Phantom body.
It was re fretted with larger frets,
which work better for me and I blew in for a plek job. It had a second bridge cover ... gone for good. That's the 2 holes seen in the guard. Changed 3 single coils to 2 Dragonfire buckers -- much better sound
It’s a 25.5” scale on a nice wide neck, often lacking in electric 12s. Just over 7 ½ pounds. Looking at it you'd think it would be 8 or over.
So a unique, cool looking item for electric 12 vibe without all the 12-string mayhem! Comes in a gig bag and is about the hippest thing in history. '
