Keilwerth SX90R Black Nickel Tenor
This tenor is from approximately 2001-2003, serial number 122643.
The SX90R is an upgraded version of Keilwerth's popular professional SX90 model, with the main change being the addition of rolled tone holes (the R in the name). These are not actually rolled tone holes, however, but a soldered ring on the tone hole. This supposedly affects the timbre of the instrument's sound. In addition, it is worth noting that this saxophone is NOT black-lacquered. It is clear-lacquered and the metal itself is black (black nickel). This changes the timbre and response relative to most saxophones, which are made of brass. This also makes the saxophone heavier than most.
Keilwerth is known for its unique approach to saxophone design that diverges from typical saxophone design philosophy. Most modern horns do their best to copy the Selmer Mark VI, but not Keilwerth. The ergonomics on this sax feel different than any other I've ever played. The keys are more spaced out, pinky keys are oriented differently, and the palm keys are easily adjustable.
I have taken meticulous care of this instrument, so despite being played heavily for years, it bears only a few little scratches. These don't affect how it plays at all, though. I played this for over 4 years, through both high school and my first few years of music school, and it served me well. The sax is incredibly responsive. Despite what you might think due to the appearance, the horn DOES NOT have a dark sound. It has a bright sound that cuts hard. You can drive it as hard as you want with no issues. If you like Michael Brecker, chances are that this horn will fit into your setup quite well.
I would highly recommend this horn to an intermediate to advanced player who is serious about getting better and is looking to step up their equipment. There are certainly "better" horns out there (that are far more expensive), but this horn will get you wherever you want to go with no problem and for quite a bit less than other comparable listings.
Comes with the original Keilwerth case (not pictured yet).
Feel free to message me with any questions about this horn or saxophones in general! I'm happy to help you out on your search for the right instrument. I know this horn specifically inside and out, so don't hold back.
