About This Listing

Epiphone’s SQ-180 was the little brother to the Everly Brothers legendary double-pickguard J-180 in black finish.

This example was made in Korea in 1993 (and carries the photo-print tortoiseshell guard and Gibson truss rod logo you’d expect from that era). Epiphone guitars from this era (and this factory) are extremely well thought of - with finishes and fretwork of higher standard than you’d see on current models (which are now manufactured in China).

There’s some buckle rash on the back of the guitar, but it’s in otherwise excellent condition.

The pickguard is thin and coming up at some of the edges. Sticking it back on would be an extremely easy job, but so would taking it off completely and replacing with a thicker, non-photo print pickguard (making it closer to the original Gibson model). In addition to improving the aesthetics of the guitar, those pickguards take a fair bit of vibration out of the top of the guitar and have made them popular when playing the guitar plugged in at stage volumes.

This guitar comes fitted with a Seymour Duncan soundhole pickup with connection via the strap button. That and the front strap button’s placement on the rear of the neck make this an ideal instrument for standing on stage. The electric sound is state of the art for ‘93 but adding a modern acoustic preamp would get you a vibey stage instrument for a great price.

Lastly, the neck is worth mentioning. This and it’s big brothers (the SJ-180 and bigger bodied SJ-200) have narrower string spacing and are ideal strummers. The action is great, the neck is comfortable with a slight v. Both first position cowboy chords and barre chords up the neck are an absolute breeze.

I cannot overstate how easy this guitar is to play. If you’re looking for an acoustic rhythm guitar to flat pick? That’s what this fella was designed to do. Watch Don Everly playing and you’ll see why he’s the rhythm guitar players rhythm guitar player (and this guitar is a the one made for him to do it on).

Comes with its own fitted Epiphone flight case, that save from the tab coming off the inside pocket, is in similarly excellent condition.

Will come fitted with new medium strings and having had a good clean and fret polish.
