About This Listing

This is a unique mid-sixties Slingerland Jet Outfit that I did a little extra preservation/playability work on. The 18x14” and 12x8” are dated August 1964, and the 14x14” is dated December 1965. Both toms have smoothly functioning original tone controls, all drums have smooth bearing edges, and the entire kit is in great player shape with minor cosmetic marks.

The only Jet Outfits I’ve seen were in black or white wrap, and this kit had the wrap removed at some point. Luckily the outer ply of mahogany looks great aside from a larger rash on the left side of the bass drum near the spur. The exposed outer plies were raw and would soak up anything that touched them, so I sealed them in a familiar satin gloss and cleaned all of the hardware during the process.

The bass drum had four holes drilled for a center rail that was missing when it came to me. I drilled two more holes to move the rail off center, keeping the bracket for a cymbal arm (which I’ll include) and allowing the badge to be the centerpiece. The rail I put on may be the most functional rail consolette I’ve ever dealt with and is period correct MIJ. Its design completely circumvents the problems we see on so many bigger brand rail consolettes from the era. It’s a perfect fit for these drums, but I really hope I can find another one someday!

The bass drum had a steel hoop on the resonant side, which I will include along with its tension rods. The batter hoop was wood with white satin flame inlay, but the original inlay was falling apart. I used the original hoop because it was round and in fine condition, and applied new white satin flame inlay to it and another wood hoop. I very lightly stained the inlays with tea leaves to simulate the aging process, and found more hardware for the wood resonant hoop. You might notice in the photos that one T-rod on the bass drum doesn’t match the rest, I have since replaced it with a match!

The 12x8”’s original diamond mounting bracket was coming lose and dropping the drum into the rail. I replaced it with a repro one from Maxwell’s, fixing the issue.

If buying from outside the US, send me a message and I’ll get you an accurate shipping quote. Please note that I cannot ship on Sundays or Mondays, purchases made those days will be shipped early Tuesday morning. Thanks!
