About This Listing

1980 Fender Precision Bass Special

When Leo Fender designed the Precision bass, his goal was to eliminate the drawbacks of the so-called “doghouse” upright string bass; namely that it was hard to play and hard to hear. Because Leo was not a player, he was able to be unbound by tradition and make the radical design leap from the acoustic bass to the electric bass. The Precision bass quickly achieved generic status, and the term “Fender Bass” was even listed as an instrument in the Musicians Union directory. The Precision bass allowed bass players to step in the spotlight, thereby changing popular music forever.

Because of the newness of the Precision Bass in the early 1950’s, Fender was forced to experiment with different strings, cores and wrappings, adapt new tuning machines and develop new amplification.

The Precision Special was the first Fender bass to feature active electronics. Introduced in 1980, the Special was available in a red, white or blue finish, and featured gold plated hardware, alder body, active electronics, visible pole pickups, 3 knobs, mini-switch, and a white pick guard. This bass features a white body with a red headstock, and added block inlay faux mother of pearl inlays. It also sports a “Local Motion” sticker on both the front and back of the body. The Special was discontinued in 1983. NOTE: YEARS AGO I PERFORMED IN ISLAND MAUI..I ADHERED A LOCAL MOTION DECAL..this bass has a way cool vibe..the decal has been on this guitar for many years..and this bass has remained in its hard shell case for many years..the decal shows a "buckling" however I think it could be smoothed out easily..
