About This Listing

This is a very rare 1937 Gibson Super 400 Archtop.

The guitar plays and projects beautifully. It has some surface lacquer checking, slight wear below the pickguard, but otherwise is a true beauty.
On the side is a scratch, I looked inside and do not see damage or signs of repair.

It features the Original ornate tuning heads, 24.75" scale, hand engraved tailpiece and its original case (case in good condition inside, fair condition outside).

The pearl block fingerboard inlays feature Gibson's first diagonal slashes.
The five-piece diamond-shaped headstock inlay also incorporates the angled slash, and the diamond is repeated on the back of the peghead in a three-piece inlay.

Every edge of the model is triple-bound, with the top receiving seven-ply binding. The Y-shaped tailpiece is engraved with the model name, and the gold-plated tuners also have engraving on the buttons. Even the neck heel cap is engraved with the model name. The pickguard is the Original pre-war marbleized celluloid with amazingly no cracking.

Overall an 83 year old guitar in great shape.

According to the shop where I bought this guitar, the original owner was the big band guitarist in CBS Radio Orchestra in Minneapolis in the 30's, 40's & 50's - who held it until his death in 2011. Unfortunately there is no further documentation to it, but it is nice to know it was with one owner for so long.
