Maker Info:

This lovely soprano Eb cornet is from the Martin, Pollman & Company, that was active from 1872 to 1880. It was a partnership between the Martin Brothers and a Saxon immigrant, August Pollmann. Their premises were situated at 31 Cortlandt St and instruments were imported from Schuster & Company of Markneukirchen. They were known to be fine instruments of superb build quality.

Provenance:

I acquired this from the descendent of the original owner in late 2017. I believe they had historical connections to the Union during the American Civil War. The latest use of the cornet was during the Second World War when the owner’s grandfather was serving as an US army cook in Italy. He had been a trumpet player and this cornet accompanied him to Italy! I paid more than usual because of the amusing story.

Condition Report:

This is a soprano cornet pitched in Eb with lead pipe tuning built using American style top action rotary string valves. This historical instrument requires restoration. The 1st slide is free but the 3rd slide is not. All the levers are missing; the 3rd valve is missing a few parts but except for that, the valves move freely. There are dings/dents/creases on the cornet but that is to be expected for a 150 year old cornet. Some corrosion patches on the brass are observed with previous signs of repair (two patches on bell bow). There is a slight bell crease. Recently, I cleaned up the cornet and gently hand-polished the cornet.

I am selling this from my personal collection to fund a project of mine.
