So what is a “B” Stock
guitar and why should you buy one? Well, just like any other manufacturing
process, guitars go through a final inspection before being shipped to retailers.
They’re examined for performance, electronics, finish and coloration. If they
don’t pass these inspection requirements, the guitars are placed in a status
much like mis-sized clothing, or the scratch and dent washer and dryer you can
buy at many retail outlets. They become “blemished” stock, or “B” stock, for
short.
These instruments don’t have major flaws or
structural issues, just minor things like finish blemishes, overly high (or
low) action, sharp fret edges, just items that the manufacturer can’t take the
time and money to deal with.
After
being designated as “B” stock, the instruments will have a small “B” placed on
the guitar, generally near the end of the fret-board or on the back of the
headstock. Some manufacturer’s send their instruments to a Refurbisher and in
this instance, the instruments are stamped used on the back of the headstock
and are also re-serialized. (Fender and Jackson removes their name from the
face of the headstock, Martin destroys the less-than-perfect guitar completely.)
Though
some “B” stock guitars may not have the $5,000 finish, some will look brand
new. In fact many are discontinued or overstock instruments. There is nothing
wrong with them. You simply pay a lot less than you would at Mom’s Music (or
123-Music).
While
our “B” stock instruments have been inspected by the supplier, we inspect them
again upon arrival and again before shipment.
Note
that we will ship guitars tuned down by several steps to relieve the stress on
the neck. Also extremes in temperature may cause finish checking in some guitar
finishes. If weather conditions vary wildly between your location and ours,
checking may occur. We are not responsible for weather related finish checking
on any instrument.
