For sale is this vintage 1953 Massie 20th Century 12 vintage electric guitar amplifier. This incredibly rare amp, serial number #1009, is one of very few to ever be unearthed and was hand-made by integral Fender amplifier designer, Mr. Ray Massie. With the 20th Century 12, Massie made the missing-link combo amplifier that Fender never produced. It's a high-output, tube-rectified, dual 6L6 45-watt amplifier with a single 12" speaker in a compact cabinet that was clearly inspired by both the Fender Woody amp design, as well as, the Fender TV aesthetic. Perhaps only a small batch of these were ever produced, and since merely 3 (including this one) have ever been documented, it is estimated that approximately 20 were made. An incredibly rare piece, and a highly important artifact with respect to Fender's history, this is a must have for any serious Fender collector.
It appears to have been lightly serviced in the past 10 years, which includes several capacitors being replaced in addition to the 2-prong power cable being upgraded with a modern 3-prong. All transformers are original, as is the 12" Jensen speaker. Most caps, all pots and electronics are otherwise original. The casters may or may not be original, as there is no evidence of any other feet having been installed, and since this amp weighs 35 lbs. it is very lightly that wheels were necessary.
This is a superb sounding amplifier. It has tons of clarity, and headroom unlike any Fender amplifier ever made. Crisp and transparent, this is the dream tone for any guitarist seeking the ever-elusive non-abrasive musical clean sound.
This amp belonged to a longtime Fender and G&L employee. I purchased hundreds of interesting pieces, all of which will be listed on Reverb for sale.
