The guitar plays like a dream. Huge tone, immaculate intonation and lovely action. And it looks gorgeous! A Real Martin beater - way better than many of the more expensive acoustics I have owned. It is better than all the Lowdens I have owned which were also a lot more expensive.
This beautiful Avalon Legacy L32 acoustic guitar was made in the 1990s. It is now called the 02-20.
The top is book matched solid Sitka spruce with an abalone sound hole rosette; the bridge is solid rosewood with a split ox-bone saddle; the back and sides are beautifully figured solid Indian rosewood; the neck is mahogany with an ebony fingerboard and rosewood headstock plate.
Although Avalon, who are also based in Northern Ireland, will always be related to their close neighbours Lowden (the skilled luthiers who created Avalon originally worked for Lowden), they have certainly made a name for themselves and created a unique identity. All the Avalon guitars I have owned beat the Lowdens I have owned at the same price point. This is the best Avalon I have owned and beats all the Lowdens I have owned which were much more expensive guitars! It's such a great acoustic!
Avalon guitars are instantly recognisable by their use of bridge pins instead of a string-through bridge, creating a bit more what would be best referred to as 'americana tone' without losing the mysterious, deep, Celtic 'piano-like' character.
