For sale is a truly rare and fascinating piece of guitar history, a Signature Odyssey in Pearl While. First, a little history of this lesser-known guitar company:
The Signature Guitar Company was a Canadian guitar manufacturer that made beautifully crafted, high quality electric guitars and basses. They were in Aurora, Ontario, Canada and existed between 1987 and 1990. "Signature Guitars - Made for Musicians, by Musicians" was the company motto and when an experienced player picked up a Signature and played it, the time and care that went into producing the instrument were evident. One of the company's objectives was to make an all-Canadian instrument that had a personal or custom feel straight off the shelf, and Signature went to great lengths to achieve this aim. They are a well-designed and balanced instrument and a pleasure to play. Perhaps more importantly, their sound was very unique; clear, rich, and bright, yet warm and very distinctive. This was largely due to the carefully selected tonewoods of the body and neck and the custom-engineered pickups. Every detail on a signature guitar was carefully planned and scrupulously executed. Even the inside of the electronics cavity was beautifully designed! All told, Signature Guitars produced only around 500 instruments total before going bust in 1990.
Signature Guitars were originally made famous by RUSH guitarist Alex Lifeson. Alex helped get the company going in the early days and was heavily involved in the design and development of Signature instruments. Alex used Signatures (most significantly the Aurora model) almost exclusively for the albums "Hold Your Fire" and "Show of Hands".
This Signature Odyssey has an HSS configuration with factory Seymour Duncan passive pickups. It sounds bright and lively while retaining warmth, and it features volume and tone controls w/ push-pull for coil splitting, as well as 3 toggles for turning individual pickups on or off. The neck is flat, thin, and fast, with big, wide frets that make shredding on this thing a breeze. The licenced Floyd Rose bridge, locking nut, and tuners are made in Germany by Schaller. It has had a recent professional set up with Elixir 9’s and low action, and it plays up and down the neck with minimal buzz. The neck moves freely and there is room left to adjust the action up or down. This guitar is serial number 1207, making it the 282nd guitar built by the company, and putting the manufacturing year around 1989.
There are some cosmetic and structural blemishes with this guitar – first and foremost, the headstock has been broken and repaired. It was reattached with epoxy and holds very strong (tuning stability is great and I cannot get it to move even with moderate force), but the repair was not aligned perfectly and there is a small but noticeable ridge where it was done. I have done my best to picture this. The trem springs are missing their cover, there are chips in the paint which have been poorly repaired and are obvious cosmetically, some of the gold finish is flaking off of the Shaller bridge, and the pickup pole pieces have some surface rust. I have also done my best to picture all of those imperfections.
This is a wonderful playing guitar and will last a very long time if taken care of, but it is by no means a museum piece. It DOES NOT come with its original case but will ship in a TKL hard case that fits well and is in decent shape.
You are not likely to see another one of these guitars for sale for a very long time. This is your opportunity to own a part of guitar history that few people know about, yet anyone can appreciate. Feel free to ask any questions, and thanks!
