Violin circa 1940, branded internally; “J Hus – Zagreb”
A fascinating instrument in immaculate condition, brought to this country by my stepfather, a Croatian freedom fighter, in the 1940’s. There was very little information about Ivan Hus, the maker of this violin, other than he was born in 1898 and was one of three noted violin makers in Zagreb during the early to mid 1900’s. He was mentioned as a mentor to Slavko Domitrovic, the most famous Croatian master of stringed instruments who died in 2015.
The back of the instrument is made from two pieces of highly figured maple. The sides, neck and scroll are made from similar material. The top is from two pieces of narrow grained spruce. The varnish is of a medium golden brown color, highlighting the beautiful texture of the wood. The length of the body is 356 mm or approx. 14.”
The shop that appraised this violin commented on the sheer beauty of the instrument, and the rich sound that was produced. They actually offered to buy it for their own collection. The price is well below the appraised value.
This instrument was accompanied by an Otto A Hoyer Pariser bow, and a Joh. Bapt. Schweitzer, 1813 German violin.
