This violin was probably made circa 1890, by and was labeled “Joh. Bapt. Schweitzer/fecit ad forman/Hieronym.amati.pestini/1813. A number of these violins were made in Germany and were sold throughout Europe. They are known for exceptional sound quality compared to other violins of the period that were sold for three times the price.
This violin is in extremely good condition; no significant marks, cracks, scratches, etc. The back is made from one piece of maple of medium irregular flame. The sides and scroll are made from similar materials. The later neck, is made from highly figured maple. The top is made from two pieces of fine-grained spruce. The varnish is of a medium red-brown color over the amber ground. The length of the body is 364 mm, approx. 14.3”. A dual violin case is included.
The instrument was brought to the US by my stepfather who emigrated from Croatia in the 1940’s. It was accompanied by an Otto A Hoyer Pariser bow and another violin made in Zagreb by Ivan Hus.
