1987 GIBSON MELODY MAKER WITH ORIGINAL CASE!
FERRARI RED FINISH! Pat# Gibson PAF Reissue Humbucker Pickup. This is a Tim Shaw era humbucker and one of the best pickups I've ever heard in any guitar.
Single Volume and Tone control (highly responsive when rolling off highs). Gorgeous Rosewood Fretboard. Solid mahogany body and one piece solid mahogany neck. Mini Grover tuners.
This guitar is in really great condition considering it's almost 30 years old.
The serial number reads 81007586
It was made at the Nashville Plant,
TN, USA
on April 10th, 1987
Production Number: 86
This guitar plays like a dream and just sounds absolutely wonderful. The Humbucker pickup is rich and bold without being too harsh and not too dark either. The neck is straight, the frets have plenty of life left, and the action is low and smooth without any buzzing or fretting out.
This guitar is marked at the back of the headstock as a factory second, or marked "sec" which means that it had some kind of minor cosmetic flaw when it was coming off the production line. This does not mean that anything was actually wrong with the guitar. It has no cracks or repairs. It has been well taken care of. However, it does have a small chip in the paint (pictured) and lots of little swirls and some pick scratches on the pickguard. This is what I would consider normal wear for a 30 year old guitar. Original chainsaw case is in really great condition and super clean.
Please feel free to ask any questions. I made a short video of the guitar with my phone. I originally thought that the guitar was from 1986, but discovered that it's an 87 when I checked the serial number.
Ships to the lower 48 only. Thanks so much!
Here's a little more info about factory seconds from a well known Gibson dealer. "Mid 60s through mid 70s they used a stamped "2" under the serial number to designate a second. All it meant was something cosmetic, not structural, that did not quite meet their standard for a first-quality instrument. Color, maybe something in the grain, etc. You could not order them, but your factory rep would sometimes offer them to you. The wholesale price was 10% below normal wholesale. At some point, they changed the stamp to "SECOND" (very late 70s as I recall, maybe as late as 1980) because many dealers were not discounting the seconds they bought when selling them and Gibson wanted it to be more apparent to the public than the simple "2".
