Isana Archtop guitar 1950s West Germany vintage - "Boutique Hofner-style"

Beautiful old archtop guitar, made by Isana (Josef Sandner) in West Germany. Josef Sandner was one of the expelled luthiers originally from Schönbach (today in the Czech Republic) who settled in West Germany after 1945 and set up shop there.

Isana guitars are very rare. They are usually made from massive woods and of fine quality - Sandner did not make any cheapos. At his time in the army in Germany, even Elvis played an Isana.

Sound and Playability:

As all German archtops of that era, the guitar has a light, cutting wooden tone, really suited well for cutting through the mix of an ensemble. Soloing brings up Django instantly. 

The guitar has a very girthy, square-shaped neck (like a flat U) that has a thickness of 3 cm throughout. It is not for small hands.

String action is at a comfortable 2,9 mm on the 12th fret high E. It could still be lowered at the bridge depending on your taste.

The guitar plays very soft and comfortably with a dead straight neck. There are no deadspots.

New 11 gauge strings (western) are attached.

Measurments 

4,3 cm nut width, 

scale 640 mm, 

width at lower bouts 40,5-41 cm, 

depth 8 cm.

Flaws:

The guitar is in a good condition for its age, with the usual marks of use. The guitar has some dings and dongs. The frets show some wear which can be neglected.The neck is dead straight. There is no truss rod. Please look at the pictures. The neck situation is stable.

Noticeable is a very typical shrinking of the binding in one place on the upper bout. You can spot it on the first picture.

I polished the frets, oiled the fretboard and the tuners, and put on new 11 gauge strings. The guitar comes un-tuned, and is playable immediately after tuning it up.
