The Sennheiser e609 is a super-cardioid microphone that has been designed specifically for micing guitar cabinets face on and extremely close to the signal source. The e609 is extremely rugged and is a practical shape for both stage and studio use. The Super-cardioid pickup pattern provides great off axis rejection from other onstage signals resulting in a clear signal that can be processed more heavily without bringing out background noise.
The Sennheiser e609 is also a suitable microphone for miking drums and especially shining on toms.
