About This Listing

Up for sale is a racked pair of McCurdy CP8496 Compressors flanked by a pair of ALPS VU Meters.

These compressors are relatively rare FET-based units that were designed to be used with McCurdy's modular 8400, 8500, and 8650 series broadcast/studio mixers, alongside the also well-regarded EQ155.

This particular pair of modules have been completely serviced, including a full re-cap with Nichicon capacitors, cleaning of all pots and switches, and a complete calibration.  Flexibility is increased by the addition of a stereo link switch on the front panel, underneath the meters.  In stereo link mode the user will should adjust the controls to match on each unit for predictable compression, but the side-chain will track stereo sources and gain reduction evenly.
These units have had their time constants altered to be more useful for a wider variety of studio tasks.  As stock the attack times range from 500µS to around 6mS, and release times from 1s-10s.  They have been modified to range from ~4mS-95mS on the attack and ~2mS-250mS on the release side.  This modification involved changing one of the control pots, which was replaced with an identical PEC part to the original.  In future should the user wish to alter these time constants it can be done by changing a single capacitor to suit your requirements.  Service/operation manual and schematics will be made available.
VU Meters display output level and Gain reduction, selectable by a front panel switch on the module.  The power supply for the unit is linear, and housed inside the enclosure so there is no extra external box to have laying around taking up space.  The enclosure is stained poplar, finished in a hand rubbed tung oil.  Input, output and power connections are all Swiss-made Neutrik, internal wiring is Mogami and MIL-Spec ETFE.
The sound of these units is best described as smooth, clean, and transparent.  They can add a definite snap to percussion and bass, but they are definitely not a 'grabby' or overly coloured compressor.  It is easy to hit 7-10db of gain reduction and not realize it!  They have performed well on drum bus, bass and vocal sources.  Excellent for controlling acoustic guitars naturally without getting overly choked off.
Currently the unit has no handle.  If the buyer requests, a black leather 'lunchbox' style handle can be added before shipping for no additional cost.
Pricing these units is very difficult as they are somewhat rare and often come up as modules only, not fully racked units, serviced and with power supply.   I believe the price for this unit is fair based on a fair amount of research- however I am more than willing to accept reasonable offers and/or evidence of past sale prices.
