About This Listing

Here we have a circa 1970s Flatiron Model 1 “Army-Navy” style mandolin that’s been converted to left-hand orientation. We don’t deal in a lot of folk instruments but we’re fairly certain it dates to late 1970s, possibly very early 1980s. Normally Flatirons can be dated by serial number, but this one is stamped “Second” where the serial number would normally be. However, the label states “Handmade in Bozeman, MT by Backporch Productions” which would be consistent with a late 1970s model.

Basic Specs: This instrument started its life as a right-hander and was converted to left-hand orientation late in its life. It has new Stew-Mac Golden Age tuners. A replaced 1 1/8 inch Bone nut. Mahogany neck with a 14 inch scale length. Neck depth is .85 inches at the first fret and 1.05 inches at the twelfth fret. Rosewood fingerboard with 18 frets (with only minor wear). Lefty side dots have been added. A Cumberland Ebony bridge was added along with a Golden Age tailpiece. Non-adjustable truss rod. Nitro finish. Top and center seam were reglued by Geesman Violins of Portland, OR. Strap button was moved to left-hand side and original position was plugged. Original bridge and nut included with the instrument.

We are always on the lookout for instruments for our left-handed brethren and this one is something really cool we can offer. Comes with a Gretsch gig bag.
