1965 Martin D12-20 Owned by Leo Kottke Modified to 10-String With Cutaway
Note: This is one of the 41 Guitars that Leo Kottke has consigned to Milwaukee Guitar Collective. 10% of the proceeds from the sale of these guitars is being donated to the Stropes Foundation Fingerstyle Guitar Program. There is a notarized certificate included signed by Leo Kottke.
This is the guitar many picture when they think of Leo Kottke's early career. It is truly an iconic instrument used by Leo at countless concerts and on many recordings. It has been heavily modified after starting life as a production model Martin D12-20. It was in Leo's possession since 1970.
This is truly a once in a lifetime opportunity to own an important part of American Fingerstyle Guitar History.
There is a written appraisal from Walter Carter included that lists the value at $30,000.
Walter inspected the guitar in person at his shop in Nashville.
A cutaway had been added, along with a different neck with a longer 28" scale length. Leo converted it to 10-string, removing the high D and high G strings. He mainly played slide on this guitar and the action is high (5/32 low E, 4/32 high E at 12th fret). This workhorse was toured with and clearly well used, with heavy wear and a few crack repairs to go along with the many modifications. It has a warm and balanced tone with good bass response. Please see all photos and notes below for a better understanding of the overall condition.
Set up with D'Addario .012"-.054" Phosphor Bronze strings tuned down 1 & 1/2 steps.
