Up for sale, a Tokai ES-138 SB semi-hollow electric guitar in exceptional, 100% original condition and in perfect working order. A rare, upscale, and broadly celebrated iteration of the classic 335 platform, this early Tokai features a nitro lacquer finish, maple body with maple center block, and a mahogany neck. Replicating the introductory specs of the 335, the guitar features a long guard design (with the pickguard extending past the ABR-1 bridge) and the distinctive rounded "Mickey Mouse Ear" shaped double cutaways. Made in Japan and rarely seen outside its country of origin, this ES-138 has a balanced, rich acoustic voice that translates well through the PAF-style stock humbuckers. The snappy articulation of the maple body and the airy qualities of the semi-hollowbody construction make the 138 a very versatile instrument, with a bit of growl and great cut in the bridge position, while the neck pickup has a smoothness and heft while still retaining an articulation ideal for complex chord voicings. The instrument weighs 7lbs 15oz and balances well on a strap. We've had this Tokai professionally setup here at Mike & Mike's Guitar Bar and dialed in with new 11-50 strings, optimal action, and accurate intonation.

The solid mahogany neck has a slender C shape at the nut, gaining notable roundness and shoulder as you travel up the fretboard, measuring .817" deep at the 1st fret and .995" at the 12th. The slab rosewood fretboard is bound and features dot inlay and original fretwire. Faint uniform wear is present on the first couple frets, with light wear extending exclusively under the plains strings until fret 10. The guitar plays well in every register, and the frets have their full factory height. The scale measures a full 24 3/4", and the nut measures 1 11/16" in width. On the headstock, the original Kluson-style tuning machines with lightly greened tulip buttons are intact, and the "Made in Japan" text is present just above the headstock joint. Demonstrative of how little use this guitar has seen since new, the clear protective factory plastic is still present over the truss rod cover.

All of the electronics work as intended, with clean nickel hardware and plastic parts. The guitar conforms to vintage spec down to the smallest details, with properly shaped bonnet knobs and amber switch tip. The original gloss nitro lacquer Sunburst finish has a dynamic three-tone appearance with a narrow ring of red between the warm amber center and deep black edges. Cosmetic wear is limited to just a faint finish scratch or two on the guitar as a whole, light scuffs on the pickguard, and a few minuscule finish chips adjacent to the binding. The neck profile is flawless, and there's only a single finish chip at the tip of the headstock.
