Up for sale, a 1959 Supro 1624T Dual Tone in excellent condition and in good working order.  This classic 1x12 tube amp is *the* definitive sound of Led Zeppelin I and II, and although a subject of much conjecture, the 1624T was the only 1x12 amp produced by the Supro company in 1961, the year Jimmy Page bought his Supro amp (which he has said on numerous occasions had a single 12" speaker). Now that we've gotten that piece of rock trivia out of the way, the most important thing is what does this amp sound like? Answer: absolutely huge when mic'd in a studio situation, and definitely able to keep up against other tube combos for live situations in terms of output.  The overdrive is rich and very dynamic, with great harmonic content and everything from glassy cleans at low volumes to saturated crunch when dimed out.  This four input amp has two Volume controls which have been internally linked on this particular 1624T Dual Tone. This allows the two Volume controls to cascade into each other for more overdrive and sweeter breakup, although either volume can still be used on its own by zeroing out the other.  The bias based tremolo also has a very strong pulse, offering everything from medium tempo oscillations to machine gun fast speeds.

The circuit is very clean and original aside from the replacement of the filter capacitors, necessary to keep the amp performing within original factory spec. The stock transformers are intact and this point-to-point Valco circuit is powered by a pair of 6973 power tubes.  These tubes are once again readily available new, due to the resurgence and reissue of this particular model by the modern Supro company.  The gold chassis is overall in very good shape, with clean lettering for the tubes on the underside and much of the original faceplate graphics still intact, despite some minor surface rust which plagues virtually every original Supro/Valco amp.

The speaker is an era correct Rola 12" which retains it's stock smooth cone, a key part of the way this amp is voiced and the smooth breakup associated with the Zeppelin sound!  The code on the speaker frame states it was manufactured by Fisher, who produced speakers for Rola, including this particular speaker which was one of three different speakers used in the 1624T in the late 1950s and early '60s.  Typically the output transformer is seen mounted to the speaker frame, and in this instance the transformer has been mounted to the baffle and rewired to the speaker itself.

The original gray thatched covering is intact on the cabinet, along with the white piping and white vinyl strip which wraps around the amplifier.  Few Supros look as stylish as the 1624T in its late 50s glory, and the amp is accented by the original black handle and knobs.  There is light wear around the edges of the amp's gray covering and much of the black felt is missing from the grillcloth, which retains its original light mesh skeleton with clear white "Supro" logo.

This Supro amp delivers the classic, focused tone that was a hallmark of Valco's amplifier line, with a kind of dynamic, midrange quality that simply can't be duplicated by any vintage or modern amp!  Don't miss out on this early and well maintained Supro 1624T Dual Tone.

A modern tremolo footswitch from "47 Amps" is included.
