About This Listing

The rarest bird of the Steinberger guitar world. The first prototype (pre-production) GL 6-string guitar that Ned Steinberger built. This is the earliest (to our knowledge) P-series model GL2 guitar ever manufactured in the Newburgh, NY Steinberger factory. It is a unique instrument and a true testament to the talent, ingenuity and genius of its designer.

There are SO MANY differences between this prototype and the standard GL model that it's uncanny. For example: The bridge tuner assembly is completely different in design and shape versus the final version. This guitar has no strap buttons. Instead, small metal clips were affixed into the strap locations. The headpiece will allow for double ball-end OR single ball-end strings, as there were essentially no double ball-end guitar strings being offered at this time. There is no battery compartment access point on the back of the body. The L2 type knobs and the locations of the 3-way selector and the volume and tone control positions are unique. L2 style front faceplate mounting and stick-on L2 type logo.

Finally, and most striking, this GL2 is a 24 3/4" (Gibson scale) rather than the 25 1/2" (Fender scale) that was used on EVERY other Steinberger GL guitar. An incredibly important and historic showpiece. This guitar was inspected and set-up by Jeff Babicz, who was the former head of production at the Steinberger factory in Newburgh, NY where this guitar was built.

Once we discovered that this prototype was a 24 3/4" scale, we contacted our friends at LaBella and asked them to make up a "lifetime supply" of special 24 3/4" double ball-end strings specifically for this guitar. We're "assuming" that this instrument will one day be displayed in a museum or gallery somewhere. Smithsonian? Right next to a '59 Les Paul and a '54 Strat. Complete and ready to play. Even includes the original pop-out leg-rest. There can be no finer (or rarer) example of a Steinberger guitar on this (or any other) planet. Makes a great Xmas gift.

This GL2 guitar will ship in a new HUSA deluxe hardshell case along with it's its original Steinberger black gig-bag and its original black cotton strap, a lifetime supply of special strings, and a copy of Jeff's work-order. Purchasing your Steinberger from a trusted source is critical when investing in these incredible instruments.
