Palmer ADIG-LB PGA-04 is passive 8 ohm reactive load box box rated at 100 watts. What separates this load box is that it has built in reactive circuit that preserves your amp dynamics and sound. It is no wonder why so many guitar gods are using this unit.
This unit the PGA-04 has the same circuit as the well known PDA-03. With PGA-04 you could mix the direct unprocessed signal with the knob on the front of the unit. On PDA-03 there is a dedicated out for un-processed sound and you can't mix it before plugging into the mixing board. So technically you are sending four vs two cables.
The controls are:
Volume for the input gain and processed sound,
Voicing, low and high to control the sound of a simulated speaker. You could set it sound like 1x10, 1x12, 2x12 or 4x12 cabinet. Or with low you could cut low build-up.
American or British type of speaker sound.
Full Range is the mix of un-processed direct sound. Clockwise at 5 o'clock it is all un-processed sound. No speaker simulation. This is great feature if you are using Impulse Responses in your DAW.
The switch for 6kHz frequency cut. These are the very harsh frequencies we hear when we plug a pedal in the mixing board.
LED meter indicating how many watts are being send to the unit.
Amp-in is where the speaker cable from your amp is connected
Thru is if you wish to send the signal that will power you cabinet without any attenuation for a stage monitor.
Balanced XLR and two unbalaced 1/4" jack for left and right output.
Ground lift switch.
How it sound?
It sound very close to the guitar cab that is miced with Sure SM57. It is very clean and consistent sound. The ability to tailor the cabinet sound is unique to this unit. I am not aware that any other unit can go this.
This is 15 years old technology that is reviwed with guitar player that are using IR's. You won't find more versatile unit that sound better on the market today.
Lately there are newer units on the market like Suhr, BadCat, Torpedo or Mesa Boogie. They are using similar technology as Palmer but will cost you twice. Trust me I used most of them.
