1960s/70s Gower G-75 Leon Rhodes model.
This appears to be a somewhat unusual guitar in that Leon Rhodes, who had a long and distinguished career as a guitar player, also worked at Gower Guitars in Nashville for a time.
This particular guitar has been re-furbished by renowned luthier/builder David Wallace in Niota, TN. Those of you who have attended the annual Chet Atkins (CAAS) convention in Nashville might be familiar with his work, as he typically displays his custom, hand-built guitars there.
When this instrument came to David, it was in rough condition. The top had several cracks which were all cleated and are now stable. The back of the guitar was so badly cracked that David decided it couldn't be salvaged, so he made a new one to closely resemble the original birds-eye maple back. The binding is obviously not an exact match, but looks very similar to what was on the original guitar.
The finish on the headstock had worn very thin, so it was restored to preserve the Leon Rhodes Model engraving and the Gower logo.
Because of the issues described above, David chose to re-finish the entire guitar. So, with the repairs that I've detailed, the guitar should last another lifetime.
Amazingly, the label inside the guitar is intact and very readable (see pic), showing the serial number and model.
The frets have been dressed and polished and have plenty of life left, the fretboard treated, and the action lowered -- just under 1/8 inch at twelfth fret on both E strings. The adjustable truss rod functions as it should. New Elixir 12/53 nanoweb strings were installed.
The neck on this guitar is on the smaller side, with nut width of 1 5/8 inches. The original fretboard and bridge appear to be Brazilian rosewood. The Grover tuners also appear to be original.
There is a passive Schaller pickup installed...no way to know when that was done, but it works well.
While this may not be a collector guitar (due to the re-finish), it is certainly a piece of U.S. guitar history, as well as a part of the long and distinguished career of Leon Rhodes.
The guitar will ship in a non-original hard shell case via UPS ground. Sorry, but I do not sell outside the continental U.S., so shipping only to the lower 48. Shipping is free unless the buyer wants express.
Please ask any and all questions before making a purchase. I've done my best to describe the guitar in detail, but there may be something I overlooked. Since I am not a music store/business, I cannot take returns.
