Rhythm and Pacing, Rigidity and Stability, Accuracy and Timing: Pro-Ject The Classic Evo Turntable Covers the Analog Bases, Features Nine-Inch Tonearm, Speed Control, Ortofon Cartridge, and More

The successor to Pro-Ject's EISA Award-winning The Classic, The Classic Evo belt-drive turntable builds on its predecessor's warm, emotionally engaging sound while featuring enhancements an innovations straight from the company's ultra-high-end 175 Vienna Philharmonic model. The end result: A component that more lives up to its name sake as an evolved analog classic.

To begin, Classic Evo's main bearing construction nearly mirrors the stealthily silent system employed in the five-figure Vienna. Moreover, the diamond-cut aluminum sub-platter is modeled after that on the 175 and further isolates the ‘table's bearing from the heavy, thermoplastic-elastomer-damped aluminum platter. The gains in quiet and stability allow you to thoroughly experience the rhythm and pacing that make vinyl playback an extremely special and rewarding pursuit.

Improvements also extend to Classic Evo's nine-inch tonearm, comprised of a sandwich of carbon and aluminum that results in greater speed and better damping. The bearing is upgraded to the same type used in Pro-Ject's pricier CC Evo tonearms – and touts frictionless vertical and horizontal movement to ensure extremely accurate tracking from a record's outer to inner grooves. Classic Evo's counterweight incorporates a thermoplastic elastomer damper that reduces the amplitude of the tonearm cartridge resonance frequency by an impressive 50 percent. Such innovation results in sparkling clarity and tonal accuracy.

In order to further improve on the Classic's impressive detail retrieval ability, Classic Evo arrives with a pre-mounted Ortofon Quintet Red moving-coil cartridge. The Ortofon/Project combination helps mine mountains of deeply-embedded musical detail and leads to stellar upper-frequency extension. For those who already own a favorite cartridge, Classic Evo's azimuth and VTA remain fully adjustable to accommodate even the most demanding setups.

Of course, a turntable is only as good as its foundation. Not surprisingly, Pro-Ject afforded Classic Evo with a heavier, stiffer sub-chassis than that of the original model. By isolating the platter and tonearm from the resonances of the motor and main plinth, the unique sandwich configuration dramatically reduces timing anomalies and distortions. Height-adjustable, damped decoupling feet add to the stability.

A visual piece de resistance equipped with a simple push-button 33/45RPM speed control, Classic Evo's chassis floats on six thermoplastic elastomer balls positioned between the main chassis and top plate, and comes encased in elegantly simple walnut or eucalyptus wood housing. Add to that Pro-Ject's high-quality Connect it E cable and attractive acrylic dust cover, and you have a convenient, simple-to-use turntable that gets out of the way and puts the spotlight on the music itself. 100% Music Direct Satisfaction Guaranteed.
