This is a circa 1900 parlor size guitar. It has a solid spruce top with Brazilian rosewood back and sides and a mahogany neck. As you can tell from the photos, it now has a fixed bridge although there is evidence that at one time it had a trapeze tailpiece with a floating bridge. The guitar is in good shape although it has a crack on the upper bout and would benefit from a neck set. It is 11/64" at the 12th fret and the neck has a visible bow. The neck joint is tight at the heel, but there is some glue residue and a very old screw through the heel. Notable is a wooden button mounted inside the guitar that says “Hayden’s Boston Guitar”. Winslow L. Hayden was a composer and guitar instructor who moved to Boston sometime after 1861. There is also a paper label that states: Repaired at Jacksonville Musical Hospital, Muhlbacher & Co., Proprietors, 1442 Laura St. – Phone 5-1246-W emxv A.D. 1929. It has the following numbers imprinted on the top edge of the headstock, a 1 with the number 37 underneath. Also included is a turn of the century hand tooled leather case. This looks to be a Harptone style case, although there are no apparent markings to confirm this. The case opens at the rear and has a purple lining. At over 100 years old, this would be a great addition to any vintage collection.
