Up for sale, a 1958 Harmony Colorama model H1226 archtop acoustic guitar in near mint, collector-grade condition, complete with the original rope strap and chipboard case. Among Harmony's '50s archtop offerings, their visually stunning Colorama series captures the aesthetic zeitgeist of the era in a way that few guitars did, with bold, colorful graphics across a range of flattop and archtop guitars. This particular H1226 Colorama is among the rarest ever produced, with this being the singular example on record. Featuring a distinctive headstock silkscreen for Montgomery Ward, this Colorama was sold exclusively through the Ward's catalog and crafted in the USA by Harmony. The fully hollow birch body offers a warm tone with a touch of growl and a snappy, dry top end. Weighing a mere 4lbs 2oz, this Harmony Colorama has been dialed in here at Mike & Mike's Guitar Bar with 12-53 phosphor bronze strings and comfortable action.
The neck has a deep, generous V profile carve, measuring .987" deep at the 1st fret and an eye-popping 1.180" deep at the 9th. The original slender frets are practically perfect, with just a hint of wear beneath the B and G strings on the 1st fret. The action stays comfortable all the way up the 25" scale, and the original bone nut measures 1 3/4" in width. The headstock features the original nickel open-gear tuning machines which turn smoothly.
The body retains the original floating Brazilian rosewood bridge, simple nickel trapeze tailpiece, and single-ply glossy black pickguard with original nickel bracket. The original 1958 date stamp and H1226 model designation are visible through the F hole. The instrument is impeccably clean, and the original nitro lacquer was sprayed thin enough that you can still see the prominent grain of the birch body. Truly near mint, this Harmony exhibits only a couple slivers of wear on the painted-on cream back “binding” and a stray faint finish scratch or two.
The original black/red rope strap and tan form-fit chipboard case is included.
