Up for sale, a 1958 Fender Precision Bass in excellent condition and in perfect working order. 100% original aside from a professional refret and new bone nut, this extremely soulful and resonant Precision Bass is a very early split coil pickup example, with features and date codes firmly placing production in the last quarter of 1957, although the grease pencil date on the neck heel crosses over into January of '58.

This bass has all the hallmarks of the first year where the Precision Bass would gain its now iconic split coil pickup configuration, including a modestly massive deep V neck profile carve, two-tone nitro lacquer gloss Sunburst finish, and raised A string pole pieces. The distinctive note attack of the maple fretboard adds a certain treble-centric snap and articulation to the deep, focused thump of the pickup, and the alder body provides a very even-sounding and smooth tonal platform. The low end is broad and robust, and the sheer size of the maple neck gives this Precision a sustain and power that few basses can achieve. Currently strung with roundwound 45-105 strings, the bass has a smooth growl when plucked acoustically. The bass is extremely well balanced on a strap and weighs 8lbs 8oz. Professionally setup here at Mike & Mike's Guitar Bar, this 1958 Fender Precision lives up to its "holy grail" bass status, with solid intonation, jaw-dropping tone and a feel that no modern bass or reissue can match.

The one-piece maple neck has a deep V neck profile carve, a holdover from the early '50s P basses, measuring .875" deep at the 1st fret and graduating to a particularly burly 1.010" at the 12th. The profile has tight horizontal lacquer checking (visibly notable but not deep enough to be detectable by the palm while playing), retaining the majority of the original smooth gloss nitro lacquer. The gloss maple fretboard has been refretted with medium jumbo fretwire that has plenty of meat and shows virtually no wear. A new hand-carved bone nut measures 1 3/4" in width. The headstock retains the original reverse geared long stem clover button tuning machines anchored with large slot-head screws, and these tuners are particularly clean, with sparingly little wear on the plating. The original headstock decal is also fully intact.

The electronics consist of the original black bobbin pickup with original windings and untouched solder joints. The Stackpole pots date to the 48th week of '57, and the original 12/57 body date is present beneath the shielding plate in the pickup route. Rounding out the essential date codes, the neck is dated 1-58, and the neck plate has a "0" prefix, only seen from 1957-58. All of the original hardware is intact, including the bridge bass with distinctive squared-off back edges, spiral saddles, knurled metal knobs, "ashtray" pickup and bridge covers (not installed, but pictured with the case) and of course the stock gold anodized pickguard.

The nitro lacquer two-tone Sunburst finish is 100% original with no touchup or overspray, and the bass exhibits over 60 years of honest playwear with buckle rash across the back and wear through the original nitro on the back treble side edge in particular.

The original tweed hardshell case is included. The tweed is notably ambered on the exterior, with original leather ends, handle, and latches. The case has a clean gold interior with the original distinctive black alligator case pocket tab.
