****This Slave is fully functioning and has recently been serviced. It is a nice unit inside and out. All tantalum caps have been replaced. The original power supply has also been replaced with the modern equivalent. This will not need any servicing or attention for years to come, all the work has been done ahead of time***
I purchased this Slave in 1998. I was not even aware they existed until reading Mark Vail's book "Vintage Synthesizers". I am sure that book is what infected a lot of us with the vintage synth BUG.
This is like a rack mount DK Synergy except with more features. You can control the velocity, pitch, and modulation from any vintage or modern midi controller. If you want midi on a DK Synergy you will have to get a DKII+ (they made maybe 100 DKII+ total) and it is my understanding that the DKII+ only accepts and transmits midi note on and off data. The Mulogix Slave has a full featured midi spec. The Slave also runs cool and does not have the loud internal fan that the DK Synergy has. These are a few of the reasons I was attracted to the Slave.
The Mulogix Slave can host 96 patches to be layered and manipulated at any given time. It has 48 internal presets and another 48 can be stored in RAM and loaded by either cartridge or from the DOS program Mulib (more on that later).
The Mulogix Slave uses standard DK Synergy cartridges, but it can also burn voices to special Mulogix cartridges that use EEPROMs. The manual elaborates more on this. I do not have any of these special carts.
The internal board is marked 002 and the hand written serial number has faded but it also reads 002. The synth is in overall good, un-abused shape with no bent rack ears etc. It does have some very mild rack rash here and there in the typical places but overall it is very clean.
I have tried in earnest to locate more information about the serial number of this guy. I even convinced Stoney to dig around in his attic with no success. I would keep this treasure but life changes are forcing me to move some gear. There were only 8 to 30 of these made depending on who you ask. Each one came with a beta test agreement. I do not think these were ever available to the general public.
It includes all literature Mulogix provided for the Slave. A copy of the schematic will also be included digitally for the new owner.
It has 48 internal presets that are absolutely killer and 48 sounds currently stored in RAM for a total of 96 sounds to layer and manipulate. (the DK Synergy can host 24 total at any given time)
In order to load more sounds to layer and manipulate you need to use a program called MuLib. (a digital copy will be provided) You can set up any true DOS computer to load the entire voice library (provided) using this program or use Synergy Cartridges. You can do some editing from the front panel BUT in order to do deep programming and create sounds from scratch you will need a modified version of SYNHCS (Synergy Host Control) that is spoken about in the manual. I do not have a copy of this software, but somewhere someplace someone has a copy of SYNHCS that it mentions. There is plenty you can do to manipulate the sound but SYNHCS would allow you to build sounds from scratch. If anyone has a copy of this get in touch I will pay for it. The Mulib software is for loading the library and is a pretty basic program.
To recap, this is what you get: 1. Fully restored and 100% working Mulogix Slave 2. All ORIGINAL literature provided by Mulogix to the Mulogix Slave beta testers including the instruction manual for Mulib (there is a URL to a high quality scan above but the owner gets the original) 3. A digital copy of the schematic (URL above) 4. A digital copy of the Mulib software including the entire voice library for the Slave (URL above) 5. The proper serial cable for connecting the Slave to the DOS computer of your choice. You have to use a computer only running DOS not Windows. Windows will try to control the serial port. You can use any DOS based computer, but not a DOS emulator. You can use anything from a 1985 IBM PC all the way up to a 2000s Dell, just make sure it has a true serial port and does not have Widows installed. Interestingly enough Mulib will also work with the DKII+
If you like the crispy dark textured sounds of the PPG Wave, Yamaha DX1, Prophet VS, Synclavier or the Fairlight CMI in synthesis mode then you will like the sounds of the Slave. It has vicious evolving sounds that no analog could ever make. I love analog but needed some fresh sounds to add to the mix and the Slave was perfect for this task. I have really enjoyed this unit and I am sure the next owner will also.
