Body: Natoh with alder veneer on top
Neck: Maple with rosewood fretboard, 33 3/4" scale
Neck specs: 9.5", D profile, 38mm nut, 18mm string spacing
Frets: Medium Jumbo, 30-40% wear
Pickups: 2x Yamaha SB-55 Single Coil, V+V+T
Hardware: Vintage Style
Weight: 10.1lbs (4.6kg)
An early version of what we all know by the name of Yamaha's "Super Bass". Absolutely unique and weird design, which roots laying in canonical Jazz Bass' style. Space-aged shape of the body is, no matter of looking chunky, very ergonomic; the neck is a standard J-bass type with fluent access to higher frets. The bass plays like killer, the pickups are hot and articulative... in fact, tone-wide they sound somehow between P- and J- bass: beefy, punchy tone with brightness and clarity! Most definitely kicking a$$ to any middle-market bass from 70's era.
Here's some fact: the SB-55s (and 75s) was popular among the jazz and rock scene in early-to-mid 70s. For instance, Michael Henderson (Miles Davis, Marvin Gaye) played on one of these and even used it on a various recordings back in the day. Suzi Q. rocked the $hit out of these before switching to the newcomer BB serie.
The overall condition is good. The neck is straight, all frets been leveled up and polished, shows more than 50% life left; no issues with truss rod; original-style tuners have no backlash in action. The electronics been fully revisited, as there was installed new pots, wires and output jack. Native pickups are in great condition. Cosmetically there's dings, chips and scuffs all over the body and on the neck (see photo). Sadly, the plastic truss rod cover is warped a bit, as well as bigger screws was mounted to it. Serial number is intact. Feel free to ask any additional photos from any angles!
The string action is measuring 5/64-3/32 inch (2.0-2.3mm) action at 12th fret, but you may lower the action at no cost!
Please do not hesitate to contact me if got any questions. Can provide extra photos, video- and sound- samples if needed.
