For sale is this unbelievable Paul Reed Smith Ted McCarty Singlecut with a gorgeous 3D figured maple top finished in Smokeburst. This is quite possibly the greatest Limited Run that PRS has ever produced, and is unlike any other model with its combination of shorter 24.5” scale length, bound neck, “Santana” headstock with flamed maple veneer, and the legendary 57/08 pickups! These pickups are one of Paul’s proudest achievements, and are a result of PRS’ acquisition of a large surplus of vintage pickup wire from an original machine that was used to wind some of the best examples of humbucking pickups in the late 1950s! Paul was even quoted once saying that "when you buy a guitar with these pickups in it, you are getting a free guitar and case"! I can honestly say that this SC 245 is one of the best-playing and sounding PRS’s I’ve ever laid my hands on. The Wide/Fat neck carve is very smooth and playable, and the action is fast and spongey! The tone is sweet and charming, chalk-full of vintage voicing and warmth!

This PRS has been played, but is in overall excellent condition with very minor amounts of play wear (light swirling or finish scratches, a few tiny dings, etc - see detailed photos). Comes with original hardshell case. If you are interested in a brief history lesson of Ted McCarty, continue reading. If you aren’t, avoid the next two paragraphs.

For those of you who aren’t familiar with Ted McCarty, he was one of the most influential people in the progression of modern-day electric guitars as we know it. After leaving the Wurlitzer Company in 1948, he served as president of Gibson during their golden era (1950-1966) and is credited with the development of things like the Tune-o-Matic bridge, the humbucking pickup, and the swinging arm on the Bigsby. He is also responsible for taking Gibson’s production from 5,000 guitars per year to over 100,000 per year, while increasing the work force from 150 employees to over 1,200 by the end of his tenure. Furthermore, he oversaw the development of the ES-335, the SG, the Firebird, the Explorer, and the Flying V (just to name a few). After he left Gibson in ’66, he purchased Bigsby Accessories and continued as President for more than 30 years. To say he played a pivotal role in the development of the guitar industry is an understatement…he was a juggernaut!

Paul Reed Smith found out about Ted McCarty during one of his visits to the patent office. He eventually tracked Ted down and hired him as a consultant, and their relationship continued for many years. Ted McCarty mentored a young Paul Reed Smith and advised him on design elements and construction. Paul still considers his relationship with Ted as playing the biggest role in the development of his company. It wasn’t until PRS’s debut of the McCarty model in 1994 that an instrument ever bore McCarty’s name. The Limited Edition Ted McCarty SC 245 is a “celebration” of the defining relationship between Paul Reed Smith and Ted McCarty, and is one of Paul’s favorite models to date.
