"JE-123-S was the steel laminations version of our standard 50% nickel alloy JE-123-SL.  123-S is an older version of the current model JI-123-ELCF, and uses a steel core instead of the 50% nickel alloy we use in our current transformers. The steel core will allow higher maximum levels at low frequencies but will have about 10 times higher low frequency THD at normal levels than the 123-SL version.

Console manufacturers such as Trident and API used output transformers with steel laminations as they would fatten up the low frequency response due to the higher THD characteristics of steel lams vs. nickel alloy laminations.  Steel cores will handle more level than nickel.  Users of these consoles apparently liked the way they sounded...

Lamination material DOES affect the sound timbre, it is one of the primary contributors to the API love.
