This is it, the bass that started the whole Patchwork idea at Sandberg.
The history of this bass is that the photoshopped ad that the company
created and ran as in all the trade magazines became so popular that the
company was asked by a large number of people to build the instrument
they had seen in the photoshopped ad, made up of several basses. This is
the exact replica of the ad. This is the very first bass if its kind,
the original.
I have been the only private owner of this instrument after the company used it for trade shows for its first few years of its existence. It was not intended for resale, ever, but I got lucky after many talks with the company. I have toured and recorded with it extensively.
The body features several different kinds of wood, perhaps most notably a walnut top on the horns and a “hardcore aged” treatment on the bottom of the body.
The neck has dots, blocks, rosewood, maple and ebony. All of it!
You can now order a Patchwork from Sandberg, but very few have been built and this is the original, affectionately named “Sybil” aka “The Split Personality Bass”. I believe Sandberg charges around $7-8,000 for one of these, but none of them have the wood/color combination of the original. I consider the price I am listing at a steal for this instrument.
I have been proud to own a piece of history and now you have the chance. The tone is mesmerizingly even and punchy. People can’t believe it isn’t a solid piece when they hear it.
