Rare, Elk Blackface Twin 50 Amp. Tube Rectified, Fully serviced! Here is a rare bird indeed! It is an Elk 50-watt, tube rectified head with reverb and tremolo.
Elk amplifiers were
manufactured by the Japanese Miyuki Ind. Co. who started out in 1953
making amplifiers. The looks and features certainly were inspired by
the Fender amplifiers of the day, but the circuits (and tone) were
quite different though. The original brand name was Echo. In the
early 60's Miyuki started making pro quality guitars under the brand
name of Elk and later changed the brand name of the amplifiers to Elk
as well. In the transition period the "new" Elk logo had a
small Echo beneath it. Miyuki also used the Luxor and Royal brand
names for some of their amps in Europe (and maybe elsewhere). . . .
This amp has been fully reconditioned. New electrolytic filter capacitors, new Mallory 150 coupling capacitors and new bypass capacitors. All the tone capacitors are original. Everything works, including the bias wiggler tremolo and the reverb. Elks got a bad name due to their use of very cheap components, particularly the oil-filled capacitors. Well, these are all gone. I retained all the wire-wound resistors, as they were fine.
This amp is (almost) all original, including the solid-metal knobs and the reverb tank. The back panel was missing when I got it so I made a new one out of 1/4" plywood. Everything else is original. I will include an original schematic with it, in case it ever needs servicing.
This amp is powered by two (2) EL34 tubes (Think Vox amps) and has an 5AR4 rectifier, The pre-amp tubes are 12AX7s. This amp has a very clean tone up until about 7.5/8 when it starts to break up very smoothly. This amp sings! It will take pedals well, or is fine on its own. It puts out between 40 and 50 watts at 4 ohms. I have upgraded the power cord to a modern 3-prong cord that is grounded to the chassis, to eliminate the possibility of shocks. It is ready to rock!
The input voltage is switchable betwee 100 volts (Japan) and 117 volts (USA). See photo of back panel.
These amps are rarely seen for sale, even here in Japan where I live and even more rare in the US. It has a unique sound and is a real looker!
