This was built by Paddy Clancy, one of the top builders in Ireland of traditional button boxes. It is a 2 voice, 21 button, 8 bass buttons tuned b/c. I commissioned Paddy to build this box in 2011. When we discussed what kind of wood to build it from I requested dark mahogany. He didn't have any in the shop at that time but told me he would see what he could find. It seems he had a friend who is an antique dealer that had a table in his possession that someone had tried to refinish and ruined the value. The date of the table was 1720 and came from Mitchelstown Castle, a place that no longer exists as it was destroyed during the Irish Rebellion. There was enough wood in the table to build 5 boxes and this was the first one of them. Built from 300 year old mahogany from a castle that no longer exists. It is in near mint condition and has had hardy any play. It has the very best reeds made in it and has a very powerful voice.
