'50s Original Chicago Supro Valco Tube Amplifier Serviced And Ready To Rock Your House For Six More Decades.
Parallel single-ended! Rare! Rare! Rare! This little 'shoutin' shoebox' could be your favorite home amp. Unlike some early '50s guitar amps with all octal based tubes it doesn't sound 'wooly' or distant like playing through an antique radio. Think 'right here right now' refined and full with later break up than most small amps. If you're a Tele player I think you'll really love the sound; it rolls off just enough of the rough edges and gives you much more headroom to back up a singer (you?) in a small space. The 8" speaker is a fairly recent replacement with a ceramic magnet. It sounds good but I'd change it out to an old Alnico Jensen if it were my choice. Input tube is a 6SL7. Rectifier is a 5Y3GT. Two power tubes are 6V6GT; one is an RCA, the other a Sylvania. All tubes test more than good. Enough replaced parts under the hood to keep the amp on the job. Three wire power cord is non-original but a damn good modification. The bottom line? If you're seeking relatively clean but rounded tube tones at small room performance levels with a bit of 'thang' at full tilt this might the be home party amp of your dreams. Oh yeah, it looks so cool. P.S. We love what Bruce Zinky has done with the Supro legacy. Go buy something now!
Please note that this amp was originally shipped with a field coil speaker. Over the years that probably went bad and was replaced with a much less expensive permanent magnet speaker. When I got this amp it was rigged with a dinky output transformer that just didn't do the circuit justice. I asked Jeff Bober of East Amplification to service this Supro and install a robust and toneful Hammond 125DSE. That did it! Now the amp really sings.
