ABOUT LADO GUITARS:  Lado Musical Inc. is the official company name of what is otherwise known as Lado Guitars or J.K. Lado & Co. (as seen on early-model headstocks), owned and operated by  - more commonly known as  - in , (Wiki)

Another great brand of HANDMADE guitars on my list of most undervalued "vintage custom" guitars.

My current collection of guitars and amplifiers now totals over 1500+ pieces. Within that collection are several brands of guitars that I consider to be unfairly ignored and undervalued as collectible instruments. J. K. LADO (Guitars and Basses) is in my top 5 of my list of these brands. They are absolutely superb instruments well-crafted with the best of materials (including superb Canadian woods) by a true artisan, Joe Kovacic.

Joe builds some of the most beautiful wood guitars I have seen. Of course, I am partial to those luthiers who are wood craftsman as well as guitar builders, e.g., Alembic, Veillette Citron, etc. And I really like through body neck guitars because they produce those strong sustains that keep going even after you put the guitar down and leave the room.

I especially like Joe's basses.   A good friend, who is a great session bassist on the west coast, first introduced them to me. He calls them "Thunder Thumpers". Once I bought my first one and plugged it into one of my Ampeg B15n's, I got it. It sounds like you need four guitars to play along with you-two to do the lead parts and two more for the rhythm just because this bass is just so strong, loud, and sustaining that you need these other guys to keep up with you. And throw in a couple of drummers as well-heavily mic'd.

And the guitars are not only stylish but great players as well with super tones.

Joe does an incredible job of completing his guitars. What I mean by that is that all of the details are finished before a guitar leaves his shop. And his woods are not only incredible but his finishes on the woods are also impeccable. And he uses quality parts for the hardware and the electronics.

I believe that Lado guitars, as well as those other incredible guitars built by Standel (Koontz), Veillette Citron, and others will soon attain the status of "collector guitars" and their increased value will be reflected in higher prices that they rightly deserve. The creation of the "collectible" guitar market initially came as the result of "word of mouth", magazine columns, and a lot of hype. The internet has now helped to bring needed attention to those luthiers who created guitars instead of just assembling or building them. Many of these luthiers must be considered as gifted artists and should be equally honored for their artistic skills as well as their resulting products. In a "new" open world that honestly recognizes the inherent value of a handmade guitar as a piece of "performance art", i.e., it plays as good as it looks so every time it is played, it becomes a single piece art show as well

From online (Wiki):

Joseph  was born in  in 1945. After serving in the , he began training as a  at the Zagreb School of Guitar Making in , Croatia, followed by two years additional training at Crossman Guitar Works in , .

Joe immigrated to Canada from Croatia in 1968 and began working for Turner Musical Instruments, a division of  for two years, followed by a job with  as an inspector for one year.

In 1971, having reached a workable level of English, Joe began his own business called Joe's Strings from a basement shop on Gerrard Street, in

In 1973, he formed Lado Musical Inc. and opened a retail shop on Kingston Road, in Toronto. In addition to building Lado Guitars, Lado had an exclusive repair contract with  for all of Canada.

Around 1976, the demand for Lado Guitars had grown so much that he moved to a bigger facility in Scarborough, ON.

The 1981 Lado catalogue shows Lado Guitars to have moved again to a new facility - this time located on R.R. #1 in , with a photographed staff of 13 employees.

In 1987, Lado built a 14’ 3” tall, 309 lb “Earth” model guitar, deemed “largest built and presumably the loudest playable electric guitar” by the . The record was held from 1987-1991.

The 1988 Lado catalogue shows Lado Guitars to have moved from the Uxbridge factory to a new one on Warden Avenue, in .

In 2003, Joe started the Lado School of . This was a way to slow down his pace as he was reaching retirement, and also to pass on his unique craftsmanship and trade secrets to a younger generation of luthiers.

Today, Lado Musical Inc. is located in .

The story behind the "Lado" name

As his major final assignment as a lutherie student, he built a  which, upon completion, he gifted to the famous Croatian professional folk dance group called "", named after a  word often used as a refrain in ceremonial songs of Croatia, and is a synonym for words meaning "good", "love", and "dear".

In return for their beautiful handcrafted double bass, the Lado group told Joe that he had their blessing to use the Lado name for his instruments.

Traits of a Lado instrument

Most Lado instruments share some unique characteristics that have defined the company with their unique craftsmanship and styling.

§ The Lado headstock has always shown the image of a falcon along with the name of the company. It is not to be confused with an eagle or a hawk.

§ Necks are always made of multiple laminates of hardwood, rather than one solid block. Three-piece necks are most common.

§ Most of the classic Lado instruments are "neck-through-body" designs.

§ The back of the headstock bears a serial number with the model name, or a short-code for the model (such as "SF-1" for a Superfalcon guitar), as well as "CDN" or "CND" to designate the instrument as being Canadian-made.
