Tokai Guitars is a Japanese guitar company founded in 1947. Their instruments have been used by guitarists like Stevie Ray Vaughan, Joe Walsh, Billy Gibbons from ZZ Top, Dean Wareham from Luna or Robert Fripp from King Crimson. Tokai has earned a reputation for making replicas of high quality instruments at a lower price and this guitar is no exception.
Although they started making musical instruments in 1947, his career in guitar construction began in the 60s. Their Fender and Gibson replicas with high quality features soon gave him great popularity. From the “Love Rock” (Tokai Les Paul model), to the ST series or “Springy Sound” (Strato), or the TE Series or “Breezy Sound” (Tokai Telecaster models).
The Tokai’s Gibson replicas are much appreciated as they are usually superior to Gibson in terms of price-quality ratio. Tokai has two production lines, in Japan and China. The first, known as Premium or Vintage, and the second, as Traditional series.
This particular Tokai SG52 belongs to the Traditional series, the most economic range of Tokai. They are guitars made in China with the supervision of the Japanese manufacturer. In addition to its name and serial number, the models manufactured outside of Japan can be easily differentiated because the lid of the soul is made of plastic and have three screws, while the Japanese only two. The identification of these products is also found on the shovel with the letters “CN” and its serial number. The bridge is usually made of stainless steel.
