Up for sale, a 1971 Fender Mustang in excellent, 100% original condition and in good working order. Finished in the ever popular Competition Red, this Mustang has only been sparingly played over the past nearly half century. Cutting and clear acoustically, this Mustang has an authoritative and snappy sound that translates well through the original pair of gray bobbin single coils. The bridge pickup has a nice jangle and sinewy snap, while the neck pickup has more girth and roundness, while still retaining a defined overall character. And of course with the on/off/on pickup switches set with the pickups out of phase, the guitar has a hollow sound that's delightfully thin and distinct. The guitar weighs 8lbs 4oz. Professionally setup here at Mike & Mike's Guitar Bar with a fresh set of 11-50 strings, this Mustang boasts low action and accurate intonation.

The neck has a chunky and round C shape with lots of shoulder and fullness, measuring .903" deep at the 1st fret and filling out to .981" at the 12th fret. The guitar has the full 24" Mustang scale, 1 5/8" nut width, and vintage 7 1/4" fretboard radius. The guitar retains its original slender frets which show just a touch of uniform wear on the crowns of frets 1-2, with virtually no wear further up the fretboard. The guitar plays cleanly in all registers with no buzzing or dead spots, and the truss rod is ideally adjusted. The truss rod nut is flush with the heel of the neck, which has a bold original date stamp from July of 1971. On the headstock, the original Fender "F" tuning machines with white hexagonal buttons still work smoothly and hold pitch well.

The electronics all work as intended, with original gray bobbin pickups that have four digit stamps on the gray bobbins, and stock CTS pots which date to the 16th week of 1971. The "F" neck plate serial number dates to '71 as well. The original bridge is present with its original chrome cover, and the large barrel saddles work well with the original chrome plated vibrato unit. This vibrato has excellent spring tension and actuates with a light touch, jumping back to the original pitch with ease.

Cosmetically, the guitar retains its original gloss Competition Red finish which is still rich and vibrant, contrasting nicely with the original pearloid pickguard which has lots of depth and definition, missing one small corner on the bass side edge of the neck pocket. All of the original shielding plates are intact and the routes are original and untouched. The guitar shows only a couple finish chips adjacent to the neck mounting screws, as well as a couple small finish chips and nicks around the lower bout edge. The dark Candy Apple Red gloss has light horizontal finish checking, and as the photos show, this is an extremely well-kept vintage Fender, 100% original, and professionally setup

The original hardshell case is included.
