Original owner selling Speck SSM (synthesizer & sampler mixer) manufactured in 1992 and purchased from Sam Ash Pro. Used on numerous Gold and Platinum records (See Video!!) at Atlantic Records.
Also great for live sound rack!
Sale includes everything in pictures including 18-space rack, patchbay with custom wiring, Mixer, separate power supply unit.
Mixer is working but sold as is due to age and complex nature of unit. Speck offers a full refurbish of this unit for $1,350!!
See the photos--this unit is in exceptional cosmetic condition. It is no longer made, and I would there is no mixer available--used or new--with the sonic quality and feature set of the Speck SSM (again, SEE VIDEO) at anywhere close to this price. And for less than $3,500 including refurbishing with shipping, you have a summing mixer that is balanced and unbalanced-friendly, offers ingenious, unique, and useful signal routing capabilities, a big board send and return section, full master/center section, FADERS(!!)---and Speck EQ!
As you can see from the photos, I also own the great Manley 16-channel mixer. I recently had it completely refurbished by Manley (they're not making these any more, either). When it was new, the Speck SSM was a comparable cost to a new Manley mixer of the type pictured. They are different, of course, but with an equal level of build quality and attention to sonics. And as importantly both companies have an exceptionally high level of dedication to maintaining legacy products.
Regular, scheduled maintenance is a necessary reality for units at this level. The Speck was lovingly maintained by a full-time staff of maintenance engineers at Atlantic Records--that's why it's in such beautiful condition after 24 years. But after Atlantic's 54th Street studio in Manhattan closed, it's been in storage. Think of it like buying a 1992 Porsche that hasn't been out of its garage for a number of years. It starts and runs, but the first place you would drive it is to the best Porsche mechanic you can find. Same with this Speck SSM mixer.
I have been in touch with Speck on several occasions and would be happy to facilitate a turn-key scenario where the mixer goes from me to Speck to you, all ready to plug and play. Please message me to discuss.
I would urge you to read the entirety of the amazingly well-written and comprehensively informative manual, available at .
Description below is from the beginning of the manual. It talks about the unit in terms of being a dedicated synthesizer and sampler mixer. What are now called external or "outside-the-box" summing mixers in 1992 were called "side-cars," such as a Neve Melbourne, most of which had been repurposed from use in broadcasting. So the idea of a "dedicated" mixer for synths was novel at the time, but the features are an incredible fit for today's OTB summing and mixing.
Regarding shipping: All shipping costs will be determined upon an agreement to buy. The shipping estimator here cannot deal with all the alternative scenarios possible. Local pick up is of course free. I can arrange to have the unit as is (in rack) crated and shipped to the continental US. It is likely that for the difference in cost between crating and shipping the unit in the rack, and separating the main unit of the mixer, the PSU, and the patchbay and cables into two or three separate boxes, that it will not be worth shipping the rack. Again, to be determined after purchase.
Thank you for your interest.

The Speck Model SSM is a dedicated synthesizer and sampler audio mixer that may be used separately or as part of a larger mixing system.
When used as a traditional synth and sampler rack mixer, the Model SSM provides up to 56 synth inputs (28 stereo inputs), and the ability to access up to 8 stereo effects devices. The SSM has a comprehensive master section that allows the synth player to maintain total control over all equipment connected to the mixer.
The mixer is divided into three basic sections. The input section, the effects send and return section, and the master section. The optional Expander has 16 input channels identical to that of the main mixer.
The input section consists of 12 input channels that are available as either mono input or stereo inputs. The input channels have all the controls necessary to effectively control synth and sampler operation.
Channels include synth trim, sweepable equalization, independent effects sends, a pan/balance control, the ability to mute or solo the signal, and an overall level control. The rear panel for each input channel offers 1/4" T.R.S (tip, ring, sleeve) balanced connectors for synth or sampler interface, as well as 1/4" connectors for direct outputs and patch points.
