Grover Guitar Tuner Pin Alignment Guide

I’ve retired from lutherie, but have been making copies of various tools and jigs I developed.  It’s not easy to keep tuners positioned accurately relative to the others. Without some kind of guide, one or two of them will likely be askew.   There are other guides available, but none are quite as easy to use as this one. You simply line it up using each of the holes drilled for the tuner stems (detailed instructions are included), clamp it down and drill the holes.  When you’re finished, each tuner will seat and be correctly lined up on the peghead.

A clamp or two plus the provided dowel pin hold everything firmly in place while you drill.  All the pin holes will be accurately positioned and perpendicular.  You don’t need a drill press. A hand drill with a #38 bit (.101”), some clamps and you’re good to go. That’s it.  It’s harder to describe the process than to do it. The tool…and its operation…has the virtue of simplicity.

The guide will work with Grover models 102, 502, 406 and 205. It will probably work with a number of other tuners as well, Grover and non-Grover. There simply isn’t any standardization. Should you encounter a Grover brand tuner that the guide will not accommodate, let me know and I’ll see that you get one that gets the job done.

I machine each one of these guides myself on a small vertical mill from quarter-inch thick 6018 Aluminum; no CNC, computers, automation, employees, etc.   The positioning hole is .377 inches in diameter, the guide holes are .101” and countersunk.  That makes them easy to access with your drill and there is little chance of damaging the bit as would be the case with steel.  With reasonable care, the guide should allow drilling many dozens of pegheads before showing significant wear.
