Up for sale, a 1960s Lyle SG style electric guitar, made in Japan's Matsumoku factory and featuring the same pickups seen on the Univox Coily model! These "staple" pickups traditionally have a fairly low ohm reading (just over 3K), so they deliver lots of sparkle and chime in the top end. Clear, warm and articulate, there's good reason why these are some of the most popular vintage Japanese pickups! Professionally setup and strung with a fresh set of 10-46 strings, this Lyle SG is a great instrument from one of Japan's most famous factories.
The mahogany neck has a slim C profile with a slab rosewood fretboard that sports original frets and pearl dot inlay. The stock frets have a bit more height and width to them than what you typically see on a Japanese guitar of this vintage, making fretting easier and bent notes in the higher registers ring clearly. The fretwire has virtually no wear, with near perfect crowns on the frets all the way up the fretboard. On the headstock, the silkscreened gold "Lyle" logo is very clean and the original 3x3 open back tuners on the headstock all turn smoothly and hold pitch well.
On the body, all of the electronics work as they should, including the small on/off switches for each pickup. The gold bell Volume and Tone knobs (with small "V" and "T" text on top) are some of the cleanest we've seen. The vibrato unit works smoothly with the Bigsby style aluminum bridge, actuating in a similar way to a Fender Jazzmaster vibrato unit for quick surfy shimmies or deeper dives. In appearance and functionality, this guitar is clearly attempting to capture the vibe of the Gibson SGs of the era, and this Lyle does a decent job in a charming, vintage Japanese guitar way. Cosmetically, the instrument is in excellent shape, showing some light checking and a few scattered tiny nicks and scuffs, but no serious wear of any kind. It's cool, it's complete and this Lyle is 100% original!
A gigbag is included (not pictured).
