Rare and unusual find, among those not even Reverb's database has ever heard about!
Albeit its little known name, Cabotron is still an active brand to the present day and used to be one of the most revered Italian brands in professional audio. Along with Farfisa, FBT, Montarbo, Davoli, RCF, Elka, Lombardi, GEM, Galanti, Eko, Meazzi, Welson and a few others, the company established itself as a reference point for the Italian musical movements during the '60es, the '70es and the early '80es. They specialized in P.A. and their massive speakers and mixers are still around, here in Italy, and at times very sought after for their sound and reliability. All in all, as a proof of the solidity and quality of that production, many of these glorious brands are still in the business and some (like FBT, Montarbo, RCF…) have established themselves as leading companies in the field.
This amplifier is certainly a unique one; completely restored both internally and externally by the previous owner who cleaned all circuits and performed no modifications plus endowed it with a new cabinet from scratch and gave it a brand new Celestion G12B-150 speaker (which, if you ask me, is one of the most underrated Celestions out there: it's the father of the K100 and sounds like a G12T75 on steroids with plenty of headroom, gorgeous bass response and a full dynamic range while handling 150W).
All tube circuitry with 2x12AX7 preamp tubes and the gorgeous PL504 power tubes which can pull out up to 80W (as they do in this amp) and be found easily and for a very few bucks as matched duets on eBay and elsewhere.
This amp features two channels, pretty much similar one to the other with the exception of a few tweaks on channel 1 sporting an "emphasis" control which acts as a boost for a wide range of frequencies from 50Hz to 10kHz and helps you shape the sound according to your tastes. The Treble control on this channel is actually a push/pull switch which activates a bright circuit which is essentially a treble boost. Channel 2 is pretty basic, just a bass and a treble control, but each channel has its own volume so they can be ran simultaneously and give a wonderful platform maybe for looping on separate tracks or for different guitars from a song to the other.
The amp also has an on-board power-scaling switch allowing it to run at full blast (80W) or at half the power (40W) or at 20W: no noticeable changes in sound but, of course, a different headroom for each setting.
As you will hear by the videos, its bright and full bodied sound is a perfect platform for gain pedals, and at this price I'm pretty much selling it for the cost of the speaker and the transformers alone.
I can ship everywhere in Europe but I guess it's not going to be cheap, so mail me to get an exact quote, although local pickup in Florence is preferred. If you wish to make a head from the amp, I can ship the head and the speaker without its current cabinet: that would surely make the shipment cheaper.
I'm always interested in delay and phaser pedals, so hit me up if you wish me to have a look to something nice that you have!
