Vintage 1964 Regal 235/ Harmony Sovereign H-1260 “New Jumbo” Acoustic Guitar in Excellent Restored Condition w/ Vintage Case, made in Chicago, USA in 1964!

Vintage 1964 Regal 235/ Harmony Sovereign H-1260 “New Jumbo” Acoustic Guitar w/ Vintage Case, made in Chicago, USA in 1964. This is a fantastic sounding 1260 in excellent shape after a neck reset, new bone saddle and various repairs, all cleaned up and dialed in with D’Addario 11s, ready to tune up and play on arrival. This has some cosmetic issues and signs of repairs, with a lot of work done to bring it back to life. This comes with vintage chipboard case, professionally packed and shipped with signature required for delivery.
The iconic Harmony Sovereign Jumbo has been a favorite of song writers and recording artists for almost 60 years, used by many iconic guitar players on some the most significant recordings ever, from Jimmy Page to Ryan Adams.
This beauty has an S-64 date stamp, indicating that it was made in the second half of 1964. It features all solid wood construction with a solid Sitka spruce top and a solid one-piece Honduran Mahogany back and sides, jumbo sized 16-1/4” wide body, 1-3/4" nut width and a 25" scale length on a solid mahogany neck with a bound Ebonized Maple fretboard (definitely not ebony!), multiple bindings on top, inlayed rosette, nice original Waverly Deluxe tuners, new handmade compensated bone saddle, original tortoiseshell pickguard, Brazilian Rosewood bridge, fancy headstock overlay, shop-made truss rod cover, original heel cap and endpin. The medium-profile mahogany neck is right around average size for a early/mid-60s 1260 and feels great. It has received a neck reset and a new handmade compensated bone saddle, with a new shop-made truss rod cover to match the original 235. The original frets were lightly polished and show minor wear, it plays easy up and down the fretboard and sounds amazing. The original tuners are in excellent shape, complete and working well with original ferrules. It has plenty of dings, scratches and finish imperfections, some small dings on the back of the neck, art work on the back and evidence of repairs. The previous owner attempted to remove the neck and partially cracked the heel in the process, as well as broke the fretboard extension. The heel has received a solid repair and the fretboard extension was painstakingly pieced back together with some drop fill on the cracks and chips, looks like the heel cap was re-installed too, with some marks around the edges. There are some small cracks on both sides of the body that were repaired from the inside and not touched up, with some finish cracks around the sides and lower part of the top. There is some minor warping around the rosette and minor bellying behind the bridge, as commonly seen on this model, and the beautiful tight grained solid spruce top is crack free. The previous owner carved some wings into the clear coat on the back and touched it up with brown finish, (clear indicator of way too much Red Bull), it actually looks pretty cool. The original pickguard appears to have been re-glued, as well. The binding shows minor shrinkage and had to be fixed up on either side of the fretboard extension, where a glue line is visible after the repairs. It’s got new D’Addario 11-52 80/20 brass strings, action set about 4/64" to 3/32” @ 12th fret with plenty of saddle for any future adjustments it may need.
The tone is huge and rich with wonderful sustaining harmonics, as you would expect. The maple fretboard on this model gives it a little more brightness, which really sounds great with the huge lows and mids these produce. The Harmony 1260 has a sound all it’s own with a massive bass response and note articulation very specific to this model. These all need neck resets to play well and the ladder braced solid wood bodies are what provide them with the charm and incredible recognition they have earned. Therefore, I carefully restore each one with respect to the original construction and design of each model and fabricate any shop-made parts to match the originals, whenever possible, and reset the necks much tighter and more accurately than when they were originally manufactured, resulting in a traditional vintage instrument that is incredibly inspiring and rewarding to play, while retaining all of it’s value and collectibility. Anyone who tells you these need to be X-braced to sound amazing, clearly misunderstands these guitars and has never heard Led Zeppelin IV! From the solid spruce tops to the lightweight bracing and huge one-piece mahogany backs, the woods Harmony used on their best acoustics was magic.
Offered with a period chipboard case that’s a great fit, with a lot of stains, scuffs and a missing storage compartment. I have a nice 1260 compatible hardcase listed as an upgrade option, check it out. This is a wonderful Sovereign that plays great and sounds amazing, packed and shipped with experience you can trust and insured with signature required for delivery.
