One of the rarest of the rare vintage bass guitars with a sound unique to its own. This will be one of the few opportunities you will ever have to own one of these! If this guitar could talk it would have quite a story. This 4002 sat in a special display case with some other valuable guitars at Driver Music in Bethany, Oklahoma from about 1979 to 1988. I purchased this guitar in 1988 and have owned it to this day. This is a one owner bass. The body is highly figured birdseye maple - beautiful - nothing short of beautiful. The fingerboard is dark ebony with  mother-of-pearl fret markers. The body is bound in black and white checkerboard and the headstock is bound in black. The tuners are the original Schallers and are small chrome units which differ from other 4000 series basses. The pickups are flush mounted to the pickguard and shifted more to the tailpiece like a jazz bass. Absent are the usual Rickenbacker pole pieces. These pickups are covered with Tolex (just like the case) and ringed in chrome. The pickguard is three layers - black on white, on black, and there is chrome plate around the rear pickup. The only modifications are strap locks, a Badass bridge in place of the original tailpiece, and it is a bolt on. I saved all the original parts for the purist collectors. The 4002 has a 21 fret neck instead of the usual 20. It will not fit in a 4000 series case! Rick made a special one for this. I know because I had to order it back in 1989. Patch cord plugs are wired for a standard 1/4" plug, Rick-o-sound (stereo), and low impedance which is unique to this model. Very few of these guitars were produced because few could afford it! There was no such thing as a "Special Edition".  I believe it to be interesting to note the serial number is 3456. I called Rickenbacker and I was told it was manufactured in the summer of 1978.
