IBANEZ GIO CUSTOM SHORT SCALE STEREO PICCOLO ELECTRIC BASS GUITAR
The item for sale is a new, IBANEZ GIO CUSTOM SHORT SCALE STEREO PICCOLO ELECTRIC BASS GUITAR brought to you by Off The Wall Guitars.
I classify my custom creations as "new other" because as the component parts may have originated in previous instruments they have never been gigged in their present custom configuration.
This is a player's guitar that will stand up to any gig. If you're not obsessive about minor cosmetic flaws and want a solid, dependable ax that is one-of-a-kind, looks cool and plays easily with a wide range of tones, this instrument is for you.
CONSTRUCTION:
The IBANEZ GIO CUSTOM SHORT SCALE STEREO PICCOLO ELECTRIC BASS GUITAR is constructed from a Ibanez Gio GAX-70 6 String Electric Guitar Body custom mounted with a Ibanez Mikro Bass Guitar Neck. The PICCOLO BASS GUITAR is strung with a mixed set of bass guitar and electric guitar strings, approx. gauges (56-44-34-24) and tuned low to high, E-A-D-G in the range of a guitar's bottom four strings. IBANEZ GIO CUSTOM SHORT SCALE STEREO PICCOLO ELECTRIC BASS GUITAR has been professionally set-up by my guitar tech, master luthier, Ashley Davis.
The guitar weighs in at a light 9 lbs.

CONDITION:
The IBANEZ GIO CUSTOM SHORT SCALE STEREO PICCOLO ELECTRIC BASS GUITAR is in excellent structural condition and good cosmetic shape. The original bridge was relocated to accommodate the longer bass guitar scale length and the post holes were plugged (see photos) with a similar color; there is also some finish color fading in that area. There are some minor finish dings/chips on the body,(see photos) mostly near the lower knob and one opposite the neck pocket that have been lightly touched up with a similar color. The touch-ups are not factory perfect, just to conceal the flaws.
There are no deep gouges, cracks or chunks of wood missing on the body or neck. The overall cosmetic appearance and color finish of the guitar is quite nice; the imperfections should not be noticeable on stage and only up close.
ACTION:
I get a lot of questions about action.
Action is a very subjective thing. Every player's touch is different and unique to that person. Many guitar builders will profess their guitar plays like "butter"; you might find it more "margarine" like. I like to set-up my instruments with medium action, just low enough so there's no buzzing, which is my preference because I like to dig in. My reasoning is that chances are you may prefer either very low action or even higher action and will most likely change the strings as well. Anything can be adjusted to your personal taste after purchase as long as the guitar has good components; I'm dedicated to using quality necks and bodies; I'm not going to buy a warped neck or use one.
SOUND:
Soundwise, I always road test electric guitars two ways, firstly, unplugged for acoustic resonance. The second road test is through a small low wattage combo amp set flat. If the guitar sounds good projecting from a small speaker, it will sound great through a full sized amp.
The IBANEZ GIO CUSTOM SHORT SCALE PICCOLO ELECTRIC BASS GUITAR is wired in stereo with separate output jacks for the bridge and neck pickups; this allows you to utilize two amps. A piccolo bass guitar is typically tuned in the range of a 6-string guitar's bottom four strings for a higher "guitar-like" voicing. Most piccolo basses use the existing bass pickups on the guitar with the higher tuning. This produces a fatter, more mellow jazz-guitar tone (like flatwound guitar strings) unless you thin out the tone with overdrive or distortion.
My concept pushes it sonically a bit further by using guitar pickups in the bridge position and a bass pickup in the neck position. By using a bass amp and octave pedal for the neck bass pickup and a guitar amp for the single coil bridge pickups you can get a very close approximation of an 8-string bass sound. You can also get a "Royal Blood" type of sound where the bass guitar also fills the electric guitar's role. The sonic possibilities are endless when you combine effects as well. The twin lipstick tubes give you that Danelectro-like twang whereas the neck fiddle humbucker produces a deeper bass tone.
STRINGS:
I use a combination of bass and electric guitar strings for piccolo tunings since I build primarily short scale bass and baritone guitars; you may prefer actual piccolo bass strings which are heavier for your playing style. Either type works fine.
PLEASE NOTE:
The guitar has been set-up for intonation with medium-low action. As with any guitar you purchase, the instrument may require additional set-up after purchase by you the player or a professional guitar tech to your personal playing preferences.
