Released in 1967, Dylan’s first greatest hits album was known more for the Milton Glaser poster that came with it, than the record itself. The record was great, but it was released at a time when everyone already had everything on it, so it was kind of a yawn. There was nothing new. By the time Volume 2 came out, 4 years later, I guess Columbia had learned their lesson and, at least, included one new track, and a great track it was. “Watching the River Flow”. I bought Volume 2 just for that track. But, I digreThe first album had a poster of Dylan by the renowned graphic artist, Milton Glaser. Glaser went on to become one of the most celebrated graphic artists of the 20th century, with artwork in permanent collections in museums worldwide, and was the first graphic designer to receive the National Medal of the Arts, from President Obama, in 2009! The poster Glaser designed for Dylan’s album was done fairly early in both of their lives, and let’s just say, it was very good for both of their careers. That is the poster for sale here.
It measures approximately 21 7/8 x 33, so it was a six-fold in order to fit it in the album jacket. Conditionally speaking, it’s seen better days, but it’s not so far gone that it can’t still look great in a frame (see pics). Here’s what’s going on with it. First off, it’s got 3 small holes. Two of the 3 have all, or most, of the paper still there, so it would be easy for a framer to fix. The 3rd hole, which does have some paper missing, is on Dylan’s face, in the all-black section (see pics). Again, this could be very easily patched from behind to look presentable.
There is a pinhole in each corner, and one in the middle of each side border. The original creases where it was folded for the album are still visible, of course, which is not considered a defect, but I just wanted to mention it. There are some other tiny scratches and what not around the edges. The corners are okay. Not great, but not terrible. The bottom right corner is worse than the other 3. There are some creases near the lower left corner, and some stains on the white section to the left of the “D” in Dylan. There’s browning of the paper in the white section next to Bob’s psychedelic hair, and the white section, in general, isn’t quite as white as it was in 1967. It got slightly darker over the years.
All that said, the damn thing still looks pretty good, as you can see in the pics. It could very easily be made to look quite good in a frame, with minimal restoration and repair. I’ve just tried to be very thorough in my description of the poster’s condition issues. All of this is shown clearly and close up in the pics I posted. I think the ones I have included are pretty descriptive. Please look at them and be an informed buyer.
Poster will be shipped folded, as it originally came, USPS Priority Mail, within 1 day of completed payment, weather permitting. 2 days if we get a snow storm. LOL
I ship world wide, but since Reverb only allows for one price shipping for everywhere else in the world, except domestic, I can’t input a shipping price for every country in the world. If you need international shipping, please message me for a quote. Thanks for looking.
