Grimes 35th Anniversary Archtop with 60's DeArmond 1100

I commissioned this guitar having owned a 25th Anniversary Grimes.   Steve's design elements drew me to this guitar, but also knowledge that his quality of build and finish are exceptional.  This guitar was no disappointment.

The sound is warm and round acoustically.  Add a little amplification from the vintage authentic 60's DeArmond 1100 Rhythm Chief and you have the BeBop, vinyl, 1950's tone nailed. 

The top is European spruce while the back and sides are Steve's finest flamed Koa.  This is a quote from another of Steve's listing of an Euro/Koa masterpiece creations;

"The top is German spruce, and the sides and back are Koa. For many years I've made archtops with several kinds of curly maple, and also Koa. The koa is a more complex tone than the more fundamental tone of maple. The overtones are clearer and more pronounced than any maple I've used."

The neck is 5 piece and Koa.  The binding is multi-plied.  The board is ebony as is the bridge. The truss rod adjusts from the lower cut out in the headstock which is very handy.  18" arch top, 25 1/2 scale, 1 3/4 nut.

You won't find a better jazz archtop from any luthier, and I've owned many.  Grimes builds in Maui and is a pleasure to work with in case you want to commission your own Grimes.  The case is a gold level Armitage.

I'm getting up there in age and listing my instruments as a service to my heirs and hence the sale.  It truly is in excellent condition and you have to look hard to find any imperfections.
