Here's a killer 1937 Oahu 68K that's been converted to X bracing and is ready for action. These Oahu's were very expensive when they first came out and were very well made. They used choice woods and sounded excellent and were made to compete with Martin guitars of the day. The only real drawback is that they were mostly ladder braced which though they still sounded great, reduced the bass response. This one was rebraced by David Sheppard to scalloped X bracing and this one sound AMAZING. David was so pleased that he said that he was going to use the bracing as a template for future conversions. To me, this guitar comes very close to sounding like a Martin OM-28 of the same era. It is really astounding how much the conversion improved the sound.
Besides sounding superb, this guitar is a delight to see. It has a neat vine pattern with abalone triangles going down the length of the fretboard and beautiful abalone pearl around the perimeter of the top as well as the soundhole. The headstock is a neat Indian head shape and it has Oahu in pearl along with more pearl pattern around the top of the peghead.
The tuners are original and work great. They feel great in the hands and were specially made for Oahu with a clover design on the individual plates. I think they are Grovers. The dimensions of this guitar is 15 7/8" wide at the lower bout, 4" deep, scale length is 25 1/2". Nut width is 1 13/16".
There are 2 cracks on the Adirondack spruce top that were expertly repaired by Kenny Char. They are very tight and are not problems. They both extend from the bottom of the bridge to the bottom the the lower bout. The rest of the guitar is crack free. Kenny also reshaped the square neck to a comfortable rounded profile.
The back and sides are probably Indian rosewood. This wood was used a lot during this period in Chicago where this guitar was built. It is beautiful straight grained rosewood and it has held up without cracking duing the years. Sonically, I challenge you to tell them apart. Just my opinion mind you.
All you have to do is pick up the guitar and it begins to resonate. Put a pick to it and it and it will wake you up. There's plenty of volume but the tone is rich and complex too. The sound fills the room as well. If you've never played one of these and due to their rarity most likely you haven't, you can see why these were made to compete with Martin and why somebody would prefer this guitar over a Martin. They are really rather special.
This one comes with the original hardshell case that's in excellent workable condition- always a sign that the guitar was very well cared for which this one appears to be.
Please feel free to ask any question. Thanks!
